Training my Whole Life for This One

Another challenge, another vlog post.

This one I’ve been preparing for since birth. Every Reese’s Pieces Sundae at Friendly’s with Granny. Every visit to Rota Spring, Holy Cow, or Kimball Farm. Every chased down ice cream truck at East Waushacum or Wyman Pond. Every shameful stop at T.J.’s to grab a comfort pint on the way home. They’ve all led to this moment.

Having officially passed the halfway mark on the Appalachian Trail, I’m now encouraged to celebrate this milestone by eating, all in one sitting, a half-gallon of ice cream. I’m not doing this for me, I’m doing this to preserve the integrity of the trail. I am however choosing to import my ice cream from Vermont rather than defaulting to the national brand from nearby Hershey, PA. (I may be a thru-hiker, but I’m not a monster.)

    1. Sheetz was sorely lacking in their flavors. No Cherry Garcia. No Phish Food. No Tonight Dough or Half Baked. I’ll need to revisit this challenge in Vermont at the 3/4 mark with 6 pints!

  1. You went for Ben & Jerry’s?!?! If you’re gonna do a half gallon, go for turkey hill or something that is 90% air and deceit!

    Good luck tomorrow! 🤢

    1. I didn’t want to cheat at such a solemn tradition! 😅 If Sheetz stocked Rota Spring, I’d have eaten two quarts of chocolate peanut butter froyo in a heartbeat.

  2. Flavors?
Half the Trail celebration is a good excuse to indulge that passion and put some weight back on that you’ve probably walked off. Good for you Benj! Enjoy every mou th f u l!!

    1. They only offered 3 flavors at Sheetz, so I had two chocolate fudge brownie, a chocolate chip cookie dough, and a strawberry cheesecake. The least I can do not to starve myself! 😂

  3. Now I think there has to be. Jessica has suggested the equivalent of a bar crawl to hit all of the ice cream places I mentioned…

  4. Love your take on the Half Gallon Challenge! Glad you had a larger metal spoon to race thru all that ice cream. I’m certain the plastic spoon from Sheetz would have broke before you finished the first container!

  5. “I Scream, You Scream, we all Scream for Ice Cream” popular song first published 1927 by Howard Johnson, Billy Moll and Robert A. King 🍦
Many CONGRATULATIONS on surviving the half-gallon challenge in only 4 minutes – legendary!
